Anglo-Saxon and Viking Costume
I have been designing and re-creating
costumes since I joined a national re-enactment group in 1993.
Costumes of the 'Dark-Ages', are my speciality. The 'Dark-Ages'
is now being re-categorised as the 'Early Medieval' period, due to our expanding
understanding of it. This period runs from roughly when the Romans left Brittannia
(c. 410 AD) to the Norman Conquest of Englaland (1066 AD).
'Dark-Age' costumes are less tailored than those of the medieval
periods and so lend themselves to remote production very nicely. I am happy
to make tailored medieval garments, but they will need to be fitted to your
body and this requires us to get together so you can try the garments on, before
I finish them.
I can supply individual garments, and provide details
of other suppliers to complete a full, historically accurate outfit.

Fabric Garments are usually made from commercially available wool, linen and silk. Where possible I try to buy authentic fabrics with the correct thread count and fibre content. Where this is not possible, alternatives will be noted. These fabrics range from £3.50 per metre (in the sales) to £15.00 per metre. Museum Quality I can now also supply wool made from hand-spun, hand-dyed wool, by hand, on a home loom, but this has to be shipped from America and costs £27.00 per metre. This comes in Tabby, 2/2 Twill, Herringbone twill, Broken herringbone twill, Diamond and Lozenge twill weaves. It is quite narrow (24-26 inches wide) so only suitable for people with a chest/waist/hip measurement under 40 inches.
Construction Fully authentic garments are hand stitched with thread to match the garment as closely as possible. This increases the cost of the garment considerably. Internal seams can be machine stitched, though all hems will still be hand stitched. I charge roughly £4.00 per seam/hem for hand stitching and 60p per seam for machine stitching (garments with more complicated tailoring will cost more, obviously).
Decoration Decoration can take the form of tablet-woven edging, bands of constrasting fabric, or embroidery. Tablet-Weave I get my tablet-weave from external suppliers, and it can be woven to your specification taking roughly 6-8 weeks. You will be charged for the cost of the braid plus having it sewn onto your garment (at hand stitched hem pricing). Embroidery This is priced according to the size and complexity of the design and will be done by hand in linen or silk embroidery thread.
When an outfit includes items that I or my husband cannot make ourselves we provide details of products from other reputable suppliers to the re-creationist world and guarantee that these will be historically accurate for the period of garments chosen.
